Lap chole is a short name for a type of abdominal surgery. It is the Laparoscopic removal of the diseased Gall bladder.
Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy is the full name.
In laparoscopic surgery, few small incisions are made on the abdominal wall. A small telescope connected to the video camera is inserted through one of the incisions and surgical instruments through the other. The gall bladder is delicately dissected out while watching the video projected on the large screen.
The procedure needs varied types of surgical instruments and electronic gadgets working seamlessly for the common goal.
This surgery is done under General Anesthesia. So of course patient does not feel any pain during the procedure. There is less need for pain killers even during the post-operative period.
Less need for pain killers, early discharge, rapid recovery are the expected advantages of Lap chole.
During the process, if at any time the Gall Bladder disease appears complicated, open surgery offers the safe way out.
Although one tends to think of laparoscopic surgery as minor surgery (as it involves very small incisions), it is major surgery with the potential for major complications – visceral injury and bleeding, injury to the bowel, or injury to the bladder. Further surgery is often required to treat many of these more serious complications.
